It was brought to our attention that an incident occurred last week in our parking lot after student-athletes returned to school from games. The police were searching for a suspect that we assume was related to an arrest warrant. That suspect was on foot and fled to school grounds and subsequently ended up hiding from the police in one of our student's vehicle. Unfortunately, our student returned while the suspect was still inside the vehicle. Understandably this was a very scary situation and our student reacted perfectly by fleeing the vehicle. And most important, we are extremely thankful no one was injured. The LCPD apprehended the suspect shortly after and we have not heard any further details from the police on this matter. From time to time, we do have incidents involving the police at school and for privacy reasons, we often do not communicate any details of these situations. In hindsight, perhaps we should have advised our community sooner as our number one concern is that students are safe on our school grounds. We will continue to discuss with students strategies and actions to minimize some of the safety risks that exist such as happened with this incident.

Dear Parent, Representatives from the Missouri State Highway Patrol have contacted our school district, as well as many other school districts across Missouri, and requested permission to have state troopers walk the halls during school hours. The patrol has also offered to perform programs about general safety and various state laws as time permits during regular school hours. Our school was not chosen as a result of any study, safety concern or worry related to any pre-existing safety problem. This is part of a statewide initiative by the Missouri State Highway Patrol to increase the visibility of law enforcement in Missouri schools. The benefit of this is two-fold; an added level of security for our children and the opportunity for the student body to interact with state troopers in a positive learning environment. Please keep this in mind as you may see highway patrol cars in the school parking lots and your children may tell you about state troopers walking the hallways of their school. In closing, the purpose of this letter is merely to inform parents and guardians of our student body about the initiative of the Missouri State Highway Patrol to have a more visible presence in schools across Missouri. Our school has welcomed the presence of our local state troopers, who are part of our community, and view this as an opportunity to enhance the safety of our existing school safety plan. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free, to call or visit me at my office. Sincerely, Mr. David Deets, Superintendent
